our breeding goals

Only a few decades ago it was used as a “light work horse”, but the 140-155cm high Haflinger horse is now bred as a family and leisure horse for various equestrian sports. An excellent character, great willingness to perform and a balanced temperament are therefore just as important to the breeding goals as a harmonious physique that corresponds to that of an elegant and dynamic horse.

The Haflinger is often described as particularly patient and child-friendly. Nevertheless, the Haflinger also likes to make its own decisions – after all, life in the Alps requires a certain degree of independence.

The Unterwirt Haflinger Stud has been dedicated to breeding these friendly golden foxes for over 60 years and offers Haflingers for sale. Georg Oberkofler is available to you at any time for advice or sales discussions.

FAQs

  • In addition to your personal taste and your impression of the horse, there are a few other things you should pay attention to when buying a Haflinger.

Haflingers are a protected breed. A look at the horse passport will tell you the proportion of foreign blood, which for purebred Haflingers must be 0%. The pedigree of a Haflinger, which you can also find in its horse passport, also says a lot about its character and constitution.

When you look at the horse, it should appear healthy, well-fed, trained and alert. Visible bones are just as much a defect as a sagging back or sunken loins. Also make sure the legs are straight and the hooves are properly shod.

During the test preparation, a horse that has been ridden in should react attentively and cleanly to assistance and should neither appear too timid nor too sluggish.

  • The price for a Haflinger from Unterwirt breeding depends on many factors. We generally sell our horses from the age of 7 months. In addition to age, the pedigree, whether the horse has already been broken in, and how high we rate its breeding value are also crucial. There is a wide price range from €1,000 for a foal to €40,000 for an adult, broken-in breeding stallion with good pedigree.

  • In our opinion, it depends less on stallion, mare or gelding, but more on the rider. The fact that stallions are a little more demanding and mares and geldings are a little easier to ride is largely true. However, if you get on a horse confidently, consistently and calmly, you will get along well with any horse. The best way to find out which of our Haflinger horses is right for you is to take a trial riding lesson or go for a ride.

  • Haflingers are as versatile as they are high-performance. This makes them ideal leisure sport horses. Whether it's dressage, carriage driving, show jumping, gallop racing or off-road racing – your Unterwirt Haflinger won't win any Group 1 tournaments, but she'll have the greatest joy working out together with you.

  • If you are interested in buying one or more Unterwirt Haflingers, just give us a call! The best way to tell us what you are looking for is over the phone.

To choose a suitable horse (or several) for you, it is best to take a day and visit our stud farm. We will introduce you to some of our Haflinger horses that may be suitable for you. When you try it out, you'll see which one will be yours.

Once you've made this decision, we'll arrange everything else: rewriting the studbook, processing payments, getting a veterinary certificate for international transport and preparing the horse for collection.

  • For legal and insurance reasons, we do not offer horse transport. So please organize the collection yourself.
